Whole Brain Thinking and HBDI

Kim Deans is a HBDI® Certified Practitioner

Do you live and work with people who operate and think differently to you?

Do you ever experience frustrations when communicating concepts that seem so obvious to you and yet even with your best efforts, you can be left wondering why others just don’t get it?

Even when we interact with people who share our vision and values, these types of challenges can emerge.

I have come across a wide range of assessment tools in my own personal and professional journey, all which have provided me with useful insights.  When I experienced my personal HBDI assessment and learned about Whole Brain Thinking I gained invaluable awareness around how I can better communicate with others.  Challenges I have experienced suddenly made SO much sense to me (there were some aha moments).  I came to understand that there was nothing wrong with anyone (including me) in these challenging situations, we were simply operating and communicating from different thinking preferences!

Our personal HBDI assessment is a tool for teaching us how to communicate with those who think in similar ways as we do, and those who think in different ways than we do. Once we understand our thinking style preferences, the door is open to improved teamwork, leadership, customer relationships, creativity, problem solving, and other aspects of personal and interpersonal development.  Teams who harness whole brain thinking have been found to be 66% more effective.

Harnessing the insights I gained from whole brain thinking is helping me to improve my communication across a range of contexts.  Finding so many applications for whole brain thinking in my coaching programs, designing learning experiences and extension programs as well as personally led me to undertaking training to become a HBDI® Certified Practitioner.

Whole Brain Thinking and the HBDI

Whole Brain Thinking is a model based on neuroscience that describes four different ways of thinking or cognitive styles, providing us with a tool that helps us navigate these different approaches to thinking.  Ned Herrmann developed Whole Brain Thinking and the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument used to assess our individual thinking styles in the 1970’s.  Ned was a manager of learning and development at General Electric.  Ned was curious about why we do what we do, what drives us and motivates us and why two people can respond quite differently to the same stimulus.  Ned developed the survey, containing 120 questions used to identify our thinking preferences according to the whole brain model.  These models are now supported by over 40 years of ongoing research.
